Miriam Kim Named a 2024 Top Artificial Intelligence Lawyer by the Daily Journal

Munger, Tolles & Olson partner Miriam Kim was named to the Daily Journal’s 2024 Top Artificial Intelligence Lawyers list, which recognizes California attorneys specializing in working with emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Ms. Kim was recognized for her two decades of experience in complex civil litigation and intellectual property law with a particular emphasis on technology litigation, plus her commitment to innovation in the legal field exemplified through her fellowship at Berkeley Law.

At Berkeley, she conducted research on generative AI (genAI) tools and their adoption by legal aid professionals to enhance access to justice. A surprising finding in the study was the gender disparity in organic adoption of AI. Ms Kim noted that the “gender gap is especially noteworthy because women make up over 75% of the legal aid workforce.” However, “by the end of the study, the gender gap was effectively closed, with women having positive results using the AI tools as much as men.”

Ms. Kim has also conducted other pro bono work for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of San Francisco, in which she trained attorneys to use genAI tools like ChatGPT and Bard (now Gemini) to successfully boost efficiency and provide more in-depth legal support. “I am hopeful that other legal clinics and pro bono attorneys can adopt similar strategies to improve the quality of legal services provided to pro bono clients,” Ms. Kim said.

Ms. Kim is a leader in the community and a frequent speaker on AI, access to justice, diversity and elimination of bias. She provides guidance to companies on a range of legal issues related to the development, distribution and use of AI. She co-chairs the firm’s Generative AI Task Force and is also a member of the firm’s Management Committee. In 2024, Ms. Kim received OneJustice’s Champion of Justice award for her efforts to promote the use of generative AI to bridge the access to justice gap.
