Don Verrilli Recognized by William & Mary Law School with Marshall-Wythe Medallion
Munger, Tolles & Olson partner Donald Verrilli, Jr. has been recognized by William & Mary Law School as a 2025 recipient of the Marshall-Wythe Medallion. The Medallion is the highest honor conferred by the law faculty and recognizes members of the legal community who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and accomplishment. Don was honored at an award ceremony on Tuesday, February 25 at William & Mary Law School, along with another of the nation’s premier Supreme Court and appellate advocates, Paul Clement of Clement & Murphy.
The Marshall-Wythe Medallion is named for John Marshall and George Wythe. John Marshall was among the first law students at William & Mary and had a seminal impact on American history as the fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. George Wythe, one of the leading statesmen of the Revolutionary Era, was William & Mary’s—and the country’s—first professor of law. Since it was first awarded in 1967, the Medallion has been awarded to numerous U.S. Supreme Court Justices, including Justice William Brennan (for whom Don clerked) and Justice Antonin Scalia, and distinguished practitioners including Edward Bennett Williams and William T. Coleman.
Don joined the firm after serving as Solicitor General of the United States from June 2011 to June 2016. As Solicitor General, Don argued landmark cases including NFIB v. Sebelius, King v. Burwell and Obergefell v. Hodges. Since joining the firm after his government service, he has handled numerous significant cases in the Supreme Court and courts of appeals, including most recently Moore v. Harper.
In addition, Don recently served on two separate MTO appellate teams that received Litigator of the Week recognitions by Am Law Litigation Daily, one for securing the reversal of a $1 billion judgment against BMO Bank N.A. (f/k/a BMO Harris Bank N.A.), the U.S. subsidiary of the Bank of Montreal, and another for securing the reversal of a $650 million judgment against Walgreens, Walmart and CVS Pharmacy.
